DESIGN

Ecological design is defined by Sim Van der Ryn and Stuart Cowan in their landmark book as "any form of design that minimizes environmentally destructive impacts by integrating itself with living processes."

In our practice, we strive to achieve designs which minimise the direct and indirect impact on natural systems. We do this by considering not just the operational impact of the completed design but also the impact of supplying, maintaining and in some cases disposal of each element in the design.
Water supplied from the Sydney Desalination plant uses 3 times as much energy per litre compared with a typcial rainwater harvesting system.
Key to this process is talking with our client and/or the end-users of the completed project, so their aspirations and preferences are incoporated into the design process.

Rainwater harvesting

A rainwater harvesting system can contribute a large part of a household's water supply. With good design,  it is a quiet, energy efficient way to supply clear clean water to chosen end uses.  Ecological design has the experience and skills to design rainwater harvesting systems which meet environmental goals and satisfy all regulatory requirements.

Community gardens

Interest in community gardens continues to grow as people search for a connection to real food and stronger relationships in their local community.  Each community garden needs to respond to the unique challenges of the site and be realistic about what it can achieve.

Stormwater

On site stormwater management can be designed to mimic pre-development flows through absorption in gardens and infiltration pits and capturing for later reuse on the garden and internally. We can prepare stormwater drainage plans for submission to councils as part of the
development approval process.

Every decision we take in the built environment impacts the rest of our world in some way. By creating a sustainable ecosystem in our living spaces, we avoid the need to degrade the rest of the planet to maintain our lifestyle.
